Basque keys. Clock accuracy

In a previous article, we examined the effect of iron on horse basculation, the choice of which affects the horse technique in the long run. Equally systemically important are the constant training of the horse (once a week) in special exercises.

To improve the technical technique, its frequent repetition is necessary. Only a person has a nervous system capable of “analyzing” and “designing” his actions. The horse is a very primitive creature and moves to optimum by trial and error. Moreover, the samples should be identical and as close as possible to completion time. Only then can a horse unambiguously single out the most successful attempts. This principle underlies the training aimed at improving the bascule of experienced horses. Continue reading

Ludger Berbaum: The contest has changed

German rider Ludger Berbaum is one of the leaders of the world show jumping for the past 20 years. In 2000, he gave an unexpectedly detailed interview, showing that he was not just an athlete, but also a philosopher, able to clearly, accurately and intelligibly express his ideas and thoughts. In this extensive interview with Chris Hector, Ludger spoke about the main changes that have occurred in sports over the past two decades.

Let’s start with the horses …

“Of course, the type of horses has changed. I remember my first competitions back in 1975-1976. Then the first appearances on the international scene in the 85th … And now, after twenty years, we already have other horses with a much larger purebred share. We have lighter horses in terms of constitution, which are easier to manage. This is a rather long process in horse breeding, but I am glad that development has gone exactly in this direction. We have more and more people, especially in Europe, involved in show jumping, and more and more people are just riding. Over the past 15 years, women have become especially involved in this. Twenty years ago, there were not so many women riders, Continue reading

The first steps of an inexperienced horse to bascule

In previous articles, we talked about horse basculation, methods for its development in keys and impulse hunger. But what if the horse is young, its skills are not enough not only to overcome the keys, it doesn’t have a baskling yet?

A young horse can be compared to a young tree. If initially it is not planted evenly and does not support growth in the right direction, it will grow crooked, and when the trunk gains strength, it will be impossible to change anything.

The same thing happens with the young horse’s bascule technique. Making the first jumps over tiny obstacles, the horse does not know anything about this technique, cannot assess the future prospects of his movements in a situation with higher barriers. When overcoming obstacles of 20-40 cm, vicious actions from the point of view of high-altitude show jumping can also be effective. And to fix in the mind Continue reading
